We are continually being tracked via our mobile phones whether we volunteer to be or not.
In the United States, telecommunication companies do not have to report precisely what material they collect, said Kevin Bankston, a lawyer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, who specializes in privacy. He added that based on court cases he could say that “they store more of it and it is becoming more precise.”
“Phones have become a necessary part of modern life,” he said, objecting to the idea that “you have to hand over your personal privacy to be part of the 21st century.”

(March 26) A distraught Libyan woman stormed into a Tripoli hotel Saturday to tell foreign reporters that government troops raped her, setting off a brawl when hotel staff and government minders tried to detain her. Journalists badly beaten too.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
BENGHAZI, LIBYA — The mother of a woman who burst into a Tripoli hotel and said that she had been raped by government militiamen hailed her daughter as a hero Sunday and said government officials offered her money and a house to change her story.
Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said Sunday night that Obaidi had been freed from government custody and was at home in Tripoli with her sister and brother-in-law. Her parents lacked communications with the sister and could not confirm that she had been released.
The incident highlighted the difficulty of gaining accurate information in a city where authorities go to great lengths to prevent journalists from talking to ordinary Libyans, forbidding them to leave their hotels without a government minder.
On Saturday, Obaidi attempted to break through that barrier by slipping into the Rixos hotel in Tripoli, where the foreign media corps is staying, and confronting journalists at the breakfast buffet.
Disheveled, weeping, bleeding and bruised, she shouted that she had been raped by 15 militiamen after being detained at a checkpoint because she comes from the eastern city of Benghazi, the epicenter of the revolt against Moammar Gaddafi’s regime.
Before she could finish her story, security guards and government minders, waiters and waitresses overpowered her, and she was taken away in an unmarked car.

Marines Who Rescued Downed U.S. Pilot: ‘It Was Awesome’
In an exclusive interview with ABC’s Martha Raddatz set to air tonight on ABC World News, the two Marine Corps captains who rescued one of two Air Force pilots from Libya say they were fearful of coming under fire during the operation, but as one of them said, it was “my best day in the Marine Corps. It was awesome.”
The two Air Force pilots were forced to eject over Libya when their F-15 had an equipment malfunction.
The two parachuted safely to the ground in separate locations, and in went the Marines. Capt. Erik “Brillo” Kolle and Capt. Joe “Angry” Abdrejack flew into eastern Libya, using lasers to try and locate one of the Americans on the ground. With the downed pilot recovered, the Marines reported back, “We got him.”
The Air Force pilot was flown to the Navy’s USS Kearsarge in the Meditteranean for medical treatment and a chance to meet his rescuers. “We bonded,” they said. “It was awesome.”

U.S. Secretly Rendered Man to Syria and Tortured Him
Maher Arar is a 34-year-old engineer and Canadian citizen born in Syria. According to Arar, in 2002, while he was in transit in New York City's JFK Airport, after coming back from a vacation with his family, he was interrogated and detained by U.S. Officials alleging presumed links to al-Qaeda. Days later, he was secretly rendered to Syria, where he was held for almost one year under no formal charges, constant torture --including severe beating and the constant threat to be tortured harder— and was forced to falsely confess his links to the organization.

Before Meltdown, GOP Mocked Concerns About Nuclear Safety
Commenting on the unfolding nuclear reactor crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant, John McCain (R-AZ) said recently: I think what happens now to this power plant as to whether the damage is contained or not will have a direct effect on the future of nuclear power in the United States. Let's have a little straight talk.
Kicked off by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake which struck the country on Friday, the crisis has already become the worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster. An ensuing series of explosions and breakdowns has forced workers on site to react with increasingly desperate measures to bring the crisis under control, primarily by pumping seawater into the damaged reactors in an attempt to cool the overheating cores.
Not surprisingly, the crisis has also inspired renewed debate over the future of nuclear technology here in America. It's worth noting that, before offering "straight talk" on nuclear energy, McCain and fellow Republicans — including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), and Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) — were displaying a frighteningly blasé and contemptuous attitude towards the severity of nuclear power's dangers and the regulations necessary to address them.
McCain is probably regretting that his views on nuclear safety did not advance sooner beyond "blah blah blah."
Denver Police Chief Wants Cop Fired For '09 Beating
WATCH IT HERE
In April 2009, Michael DeHerrera was talking on a cell phone when Officer Devin Sparks began wailing on him -- an incident captured in a video on view below. Since release of the footage, observers concerned with excessive-force complaints have called for Sparks's firing -- and now, Police Chief Gerald Whitman has reportedly come to the same conclusion. But is the timing suspect?
Nick Rogers, president of the Police Protective Association, certainly thinks so. Rogers, who shared Whitman's decision with the Denver Post, which broke the story, believes the chief "appears to be bowing to pressure to resolve the case from the media, the public or the Office of Independent Monitor, who monitors internal affairs investigations," according to the article linked above.
Is Whitman also afraid the bad PR associated with the DeHerrera attack will doom him once a new mayor is elected? If not, he should be. In interviews with Westword, numerous major candidates have weighed in on excessive force complaints against the Denver Police Department, with several arguing for new blood atop the DPD.
Examples? City councilman Michael Hancock said, "I believe the next step is to bring about change through a change of leadership in the police department." Likewise, Theresa Spahn told us that while she thinks "our current chief has made a lot of contributions," she feels "he has been unable to take care of that problem, and it's a serious problem. Citizens want change, and it starts at the top." And even though Chris Romer didn't pledge to give Whitman the sack, he stressed that "there will be changes in personnel," potentially including higher-ups among Denver police.

New consumer agency under fire from GOP and bankers
Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — Four months before formally opening its doors, the new federal watchdog for policing mortgages, credit cards and other financial products is under attack from Republicans and banks.
Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard law professor who championed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and is now in charge of setting it up, faces the hostile fire directly on Wednesday. Republicans running the House Financial Services Committee will press her to answer their concerns — shared by banks and other business interests — that the agency and its director will have unfettered power over financial products used by millions of people and might abuse it.
